SUMMARY: THE 20th CENTURY IN SPAIN

The reign of Alfonso XIII (1902-1931)

He was a constitutional monarch till 1931. During his reign occured the following events:

-Factory worker strikes: these were freqent. Labour unions stopped factories production to ask for better work conditions (protection, better salaries, less hours working)

-Nationalism: minority groups from Cataluña, Galicia and País Vasco wanted the independence from Spain and being independent countries.

-Morocco or Rif war: this country rebelled against Spain to govern themselves this territory. Rich Spanish families paid money to avoid their sons going to fight so the ones who were sent there were from poorer families. Many citizens complained about it.

King Alfonso XIII and Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera

The dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1931)

Primo de Rivera offered help to the king to stop the afore mentioned problems With his victory on the Rif war, Alfonso gave the government to him and he stablished a dictatorship where:

- Labour unions and any other association were suspended and prohibited.

- Press was censored

- Nationalism was persecuted.

Among other things he was interested in improving and creating railways.

Primo de Rivera political decisions brought anger between part of the population so  Alfonso XIII asked him to leave the government and called to general elections.

These elections were won by republicans so the king left the throne.

The 2nd Republic (1931-1939)

Aniceto Alcalá Zamora became president of the republic and Manuel Azaña, presidente of government.

During their government, the Constitution was recovered in 1931 and were added new rights:

- Voting rights for men and women.

- Civil matrimony and divorce were allowed.

- Public schools to allow poorer classes to have an education

- Some lands of nobles and the church were sold to peasants.

These political measures were not received by everybody and brought many discussions among different political parties and the population.

In 1939 a conservative militar group led by Francisco Franco gave a militar coup that gave place to a civil war in Spain.
